In addiction treatment, it is very common to find a mental health condition that underpins and fuels a substance use issue. The most common of these include depression, anxiety, and trauma. For this reason, trauma therapy is often a key component of recovery. What few people know, however, is that there are many different ways to treat trauma, especially when it is coupled with addiction. One example of a very useful and evidence-based approach that can be utilized is EMDR therapy for trauma.

If you or someone you care about is interested in learning more about EMDR or childhood trauma treatment, reach out to True Life Center online or call 858.202.1822 today.

How Does Trauma Lead to Addiction?

It is important to understand why trauma therapy can be such an effective treatment for individuals battling addiction. Undergoing trauma typically leads to anxiety, depression, and panic. Each of these conditions can lead people to self-medicate with alcohol or other substances such as prescription drugs to ease their pain. Because these drugs do not address the underlying factors – namely, the trauma itself – the substance use can quickly become a substance abuse problem or a full-blown addiction.

Programs designed to treat trauma can help people battling addiction by dealing with the core issues that cause these feelings.

What Is EMDR Treatment?

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, or “EMDR,” has been used to address issues including depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and even eating disorders. EMDR was designed, specifically, to treat trauma and stress disorders, and it is in this capacity that it can best help address the core issues underlying the substance use.

In EMDR sessions, you and your therapist focus on the traumatic incident or incidents so that you can better understand and “unpack” them. While doing this, you will also focus on external stimuli introduced by your therapist. The most common of these is bilateral eye movement. This may seem non-intuitive, but studies show that this action can allow you to reprocess and take control of those negative memories.

EMDR does not fix problems that are genetic or physical. What it does do, however, is focus on healing the negative feelings that have resulted from negative experiences and help you process the physical sensations associated with the trauma in your body.

How Does EMDR Therapy for Trauma Work? What Can You Expect?

EMDR therapy for trauma may seem at first like a kind of hypnosis: it is not. One of the reasons it resembles hypnosis to some people is that rather than relying on talk therapy or medication, it focuses on your rhythmic eye movements. Learning to be aware of these movements allows you to deal with emotions that you find emotionally overwhelming.

During an EMDR therapy session, you will be asked to relive traumatic experiences while your therapist directs your eye movements using words as well as visual stimuli. The theory behind EMDR is that reliving these distressing events is less upsetting and more manageable when your attention is diverted. By experiencing these memories without having an overwhelming emotional response, the impact of these events becomes less impactful, and you can manage them without the help of your therapist.

Over time, the brain learns to reprocess these negative emotions and the physical sensations associated with them. They will never disappear completely, but you will be able to manage the emotional distress associated with them and live your life without being constantly triggered and brought back to the past. Instead, you will have the ability to create a safe calm place and regulate your emotions and sensations in a way that allows you to live in the present moment.

Trauma as a singular life-threatening event or build beneath the surface for years from micro-moments of emotional injury or neglect. Whether brought on by sudden devastation or repeated injury to the body or psyche, traumatic experiences can make us feel like hostages in our own bodies. Rather than thriving, we are barely surviving. Trying to process trauma on our own can feel impossible, but we may also feel too alone in our suffering to be freed from it. How could anyone else understand, let alone help us move through it? Connecting with the right people at the right time is crucial for any healing journey. Compassionate caregivers with deep experience in childhood trauma treatment like our team at True Life Center know how to guide you through your trauma, reset your mind, and help you create a fresh start in life.

What Is Trauma?

Because trauma manifests differently in every person, it’s difficult to create a definition that covers every experience. Common triggers include sexual abuse, military combat, natural disasters, accidental injury, childhood abuse, and crime victimization. But there are also much more pervasive and subtle forms of trauma that occur on a daily basis such emotionally abusive relationships, neglect of all kinds, and generally when we, as humans, feel unsafe in any way, our bodies experience this as degrees of trauma. The fallout from trauma can affect every aspect of our lives. We become trapped in a state of either agitated hyper-arousal (on the alert) or hypo-arousal (lethargic and unresponsive to our environments).

Our entire being orients itself towards protecting us from impending disaster or feels convinced that we’re still locked in a painful incident that scarred us badly once as the moment keeps replaying in our minds and physical bodies. We may experience cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, immunological, reproductive, and neuroendocrine issues and symptoms, along with irritability, insomnia, lack of focus, aggression, depression, flashbacks, phobias, and mood swings. It’s a troubling and challenging state to be in, for us and for our loved ones.

How To Approach Trauma Therapy

Trauma has much more to do with how our mind, body, and spirit experienced a disturbing event than with the event itself. Our cells store the memory of it, and it sticks around to cause major disruptions to our daily functioning, from a psychological to a cellular level. Because trauma is so tied to stress responses in the mind and body, the most effective treatments combine mental, physical, and spiritual therapies that teach us to re-calibrate those responses.

Calming the whole system reassures the mind and body that we are safe and well in the here and now. When we learn to reframe our cognitive and behavioral responses, regulate our nervous systems, and restore balance to our brain chemistry, we can move away from a state of crisis and break free from the cycle of trauma.

Trauma-specific therapeutic modalities with a high rate of effectiveness include eye movement desensitization, reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Somatic Experiencing (SE), as well as neurofeedback. Mindfulness, yoga, bodywork, nutrition, and fitness regimens can help your body metabolize and move the trauma and soothe the limbic system, rewiring your stress response and alleviating the physical and psychological symptoms of trauma. Traditional psychiatric medications and treatment can support this neurobiological process and help treat the acute symptoms of affect dysregulation, insomnia, appetite disturbance as well as constant hyper-or hypo arousal of the nervous system.
